Tom O'Brien on Alternative Flours' Rise in Demand
In an interview with MarketWatch, GRD’s founder and president Tom O’Brien spoke about the rise in demand for alternative flours, such as almond and oat flour, he experienced as a food ingredient supplier during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even when supply chains for traditional wheat flour caught up to the demand, GRD still experienced a 110% increase in almond flour sales and 103% increase in oat flour sales during 2020. With the uptick in at-home baking at the height of the pandemic, this played a role in the rise in demand for alternatives for those choosing to follow gluten-free or keto diets. Although people may not be stuck at home anymore, the trend has not come and gone like other food trends, and GRD is still able to be a go-to supplier of alternative flours for food manufacturers and customers across other industries.
